They will also be able to operate a survival craft engine and manage survivors after abandoning the ship. Trainees will have fundamental knowledge in handling all locating devices, including communication and signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics, application of first aid to survivors, and the actions to take to preserve the lives of those in their charge.
Upon successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a certificate may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standards of competency specified in Table A-VI/2-1 of STCW. Such certification may only be issued by centres approved by the administration.
This model course aims to provide training for candidates in launching and taking charge of a survival craft or a rescue boat in emergencies, following section A-VI/2 of the STCW code.
For admission to the course, seafarers must pass a medical examination certified by a doctor attesting to good health. They must also have completed the four basic courses covering the familiarisation and basic safety training and instruction following Regulation VI/1 of STCW.
