BBST (Hons) in Agriculture Biotechnology (Hons)

Course Overview

Course Structure and Curriculum: The program is divided into core modules, electives, and a culminating capstone experience. Core modules provide a strong foundation in the biological sciences relevant to agriculture, including: Plant and Animal Sciences: This includes in-depth study of plant and animal physiology, genetics, biochemistry, and ecology. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the organisms they will be working with at the molecular level. Soil Science and Management: This module explores the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil, along with sustainable practices for soil fertility management and conservation. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology: This core area delves into the fundamentals of DNA structure and function, gene expression, recombinant DNA technology, and other essential tools for manipulating genomes. Plant and Animal Biotechnology: Building on core molecular biology principles, students explore advanced techniques specific to agricultural biotechnology, such as plant transformation, gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9), and marker-assisted selection in breeding programs. Bioinformatics and Data Analysis: This module equips students with the skills to analyze large datasets generated through modern biotechnology techniques. They learn to utilize bioinformatics tools to interpret complex data and translate it into actionable insights for agricultural applications. Elective Modules and Specialization The program offers a range of elective modules that allow students to tailor their studies to their specific interests. These electives may encompass areas such as: Precision Agriculture: This module explores the use of technology, data analysis, and sensors to optimize resource utilization and improve agricultural decision-making. Biofuels and Bioenergy: This area focuses on the development and production of renewable energy sources derived from agricultural biomass. Bioremediation and Environmental Biotechnology: This module explores the application of biotechnology techniques to address environmental challenges such as soil and water pollution. Food Biotechnology and Processing: This elective delves into the role of biotechnology in food production, safety, and quality control. Agricultural Economics and Policy: This module equips students with an understanding of the economic and policy landscape surrounding agriculture and biotechnology.

  • Laboratory Learning and Research: A cornerstone of the Agriculture Biotechnology program is its commitment to hands-on learning. Throughout the program, students participate in laboratory courses designed to provide practical experience in: Molecular biology techniques like DNA extraction, PCR, Gel electrophoresis; Plant tissue culture and regeneration techniques; In vitro manipulation of plant and animal cells; Data analysis using bioinformatics software; Controlled environment agriculture.
  • Capstone Experience and Career Opportunities: The program culminates in a year long capstone project where students choose a research topic in consultation with faculty advisors. This project allows students to showcase their accumulated knowledge and apply their skills to conduct independent research, analyze data, and present their findings. Graduates of the Agriculture Biotechnology program are well-positioned for a variety of rewarding careers in the agricultural biotechnology sector.
  • Skills and Knowledge Gained: The Agriculture Biotechnology program equips graduates with a diverse skillset applicable in various fields. Graduates will be proficient in: Scientific Inquiry, Laboratory Techniques, Data Analysis and Interpretation, Written and Oral Communication, Collaboration and Teamwork.
